この選手を知る — 引退レースは、生まれた街で勝った

1980年、ベルギーのヘントで生まれた。父はオーストラリア人のトラック選手で、息子が2歳のときに家を出た。母とロンドンへ移ったウィギンスは、トラック競技で世界王者になり、五輪では金メダルを5個獲った。2012年にはアシストのクリス・フルームに支えられ、英国人で初めてツール・ド・フランスを総合優勝している。最後のレースは2016年11月、生まれた街のヘント6日間だった。よちよち歩きのころに父が走るのを見たこのレースを、マーク・カヴェンディッシュと組んで勝った。「ここにいると、いつも父のことを考える」と話している。
