この選手を知る — 吹雪の峠でジロを決めたアメリカ人

1988年のジロ・デ・イタリアで、ガヴィア峠を越える第14ステージは雪の予報だった。ハンプステンのチーム7-Elevenはスタート前にスキー用品の店で冬服を買い集め、頂上に服の袋を用意した。本人はガヴィアの登りで仕掛け、頂上でその袋の帽子と雨具を身につけた。翌朝には「あの服に本当に救われた」と語っている。下りは道の先が50〜100mしか見えず、カーブを知らせる標識が見えたときだけ速度を落とした。ステージ優勝には7秒届かなかったが、総合首位が着るピンクのジャージを奪って最後の日まで守り抜いた。スタート前の買い物が、アメリカ人で初めてのジロ優勝につながった。
